It is a set of alphanumeric characters used to identify a computer in Internet.

Every computer in Internet has an unique address called IP address (Internet Protocol Address), since these addresses are difficult to remember the Domain Names System (DNS) allows to use a Domain Name instead of the IP address and the DNS translates the domain names in IP addresses in order that the communication is possible between different machines connected to the Net.

In other words, a Domain Name is a simple form of Internet address designed to allow to the users to locate Internet sites in an easy way.

2. Which is the structure of a Domain name?

A Domain name consists of two or more etiquettes separated by the point “.”

Example:  mydomain.com.do
                   mydomain.do

Where:

  • (com) corresponds to the classification or sub-domain in which the name is registered.
  • (do) corresponds to the Top Level Domain in which the name is registered.

In our case DO are the letters assigned to the Top Level Domain for the space of names corresponding to the Dominican Republic in the Domain Name System (DNS). The above mentioned letters are taken from the table of code of country according to the ISO norm 3166-1 alpha2.

The domain name system (DNS) consists of a directory organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered by a person or particular company using the Internet.
